Stereo Techniques: Assignment 2

In this assignment we where asked to learn how to use stereo techniques. Then record a simple riff and repeat it with varying techniques.

  1. For the following examples we will be using an AKG C414

The Reason we decided to use this microphone is because of 3 main reasons:
    1) It is a Condenser so we will have a very detailed recording
    2) It has 5 polar pattern settings; Omnidirectional, Wide Cardioid, Cardioid, Hypercardioid and Figure of eight. This means we can have more variation in sound.
    3) It has a Frequency Response of 20Hz-20kHz which is wide. Also as you can see from the figure below it is a really flat response, this is a positive attribute as it captures a really detailed picture.

AB
 30cm between mics
AB had a very warm sound with a nice amount of mid and upper mids.

DeccaTree

 1m Apart.
Decca Tree has an punchy tone although I felt sounded a bit muddy in the lower mid.

ORTF

17cm apart and 110 degree angle
The ORTF technique has lovely upper mid frequencies and clarity. However, it does sound a little boxy.

NOS

30 cm and 90 degree angle
My personal favorite; warm, thick, delicate, balanced and lovely clarity.

MS

Touching
I feel maybe the recording is out of phase. However tonally it sounds punchy, smooth and strong.

Reference Tracks

Sun Kill Moon – Dogs

I wanted to try and achieve the clarity, openness and warmth with a stereo technique. I feel my favorite one that resembled this was NOS.

Evaluation

I wish if we was to do this assignment is to experiment with more instruments and microphones that will help improve my future recordings.
